The Headache Clinic

Why a headache clinic?

Headache, in particular migraine, is generally recognised as a public health problem in terms its burden on the individual, society and the economy.

It has been estimated that the prevalence of migraine is approximately 6% among men and 15-17% among women. Migraine is variable by age, decreasing in both men and women after the age of 40. A recent survey by the Migraine Action Awareness support group surprisingly found that 60% of migrainers never consult their GP as they mistakenly believe that there are no effective treatments for their condition.

In a study of employees of one NHS Trust hospital, it was estimated that migraine-related absence from work and reduced effectiveness whilst at work cost the Trust between £50,000 and £63,000 per annum.

It therefore makes sense that both the employer and the employee are aware of the various ways of treating headache and migraine, and, perhaps more importantly, know how to prevent headache attacks. This half-day clinic is designed to address these issues.
