What are headaches?

General considerations about the nature, incidence and diagnosis of head pain in child and adult populations. The economic consequences of headache and migraine will also be covered.

Types of headache

An overview of the different forms of headache, including migraine and migraine variants, eyestrain headache, premenstrual headache, exertion headache, tension headache and hypertensive headache.

The causes of headache

A comprehensive review of what is known of the biological and environmental causes of headache and migraine, including changes in blood flow and brain chemistry, tension and emotional states, the influence of diet and ergonomic factors.

The treatment of headache

A review of the treatments currently available for the types of headache discussed. The myth of the darkened room. In addition to methods of pharmacological management, the role of massage and relaxation techniques will be discussed.

The prevention of headache

Can we prevent headache and/or migraine? A consideration of medications thought to decrease frequency of attacks, plus an evaluation of elimination diets and complementary therapies.
