Genetics & The Human Genome Project

Tutorial format

The tutorial is school-based and runs from 0915-1545.

The format is varied, with interactive lectures, an IT session and group discussions. Digital slides, DVD and multimedia will be employed in presenting material.

State-of-the-art genetic images are used to convey modern theory, findings and practice in experimental and clincial genetics.

Each student will receive a comprehensive 30-page MBI genetics tutorial pack which complements the material presented during the tutorial.

Each school will receive an MBI genetics & the human genome project cd-rom which includes a .pdf version of the tutorial handout, various classroom exercises and links to more than 50 top genetics websites.

The tutrorial cd-rom features a trip through human chromosomes, a guide to sequenced organisms, multiple genetics galleries and classroom exercises.

MBI employs superb biochemical and Adam Rouilly/Somso models to demonstrate chemical and anatomical structures. In addition, with the agreement of the school headteacher, a sarcophaga (blow fly larvae) giant chromosome demonstration can be requested. Students prepare squashes of salivary glands and stain the giant chromosomes to show their banding.

Superb molecular models help consolidate understanding of chemical structures.Optional molecular testing allows students to participate in chromosome staining.
